November 1st! 2017 is almost over and I feel like it just went by so quickly! This morning, I sat down in silence to figure out: What do I want November to be for me? What do I want to focus on?
The answer was loud and clear - MINDFULNESS
That's great, I thought, but WHAT IS mindfulness? So, I hoped on google and started exploring.
Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. (https://www.mindful.org/meditation/mindfulness-getting-started/)
Great definition! I get it! I'm ready to make this part of my life. But HOW?
After reading a bunch of articles and rolling my eyes a few times (I mean, starting 10,000 things to help me be mindful..ya, that won't work!), I think I found a way to make this part of my every day busy mom life.
1. Stop doing 20 things at the same time.
Multitasking might seem like the ultimate goal, but if you want to be mindful..it's not! I want to start doing 1 thing at a time. If I'm eating, I'm not watching TV! If I'm going for a walk, I'm going to take the time to enjoy the beauty nature is offering, I will listen to the sounds of nature, etc. And so on.
2. I will get back to my meditation practice.
This one might seem scary, but it's really simple. My intention is to sit down in silence for at least 5 minutes every morning. I can do a body scan, take deep breaths or whatever else I feel like I need at the moment.
To make this step easier, have a designated quiet spot in the house. That way you can go and do..instead of clean a spot for 30 minutes and then say ''Forget it!''
3. I will be mindful when I eat.
I'm noticing lately that...I have a headache every single evening! Is it the meat? The gluten? The stress? The fatigue? I HAVE NO IDEA and I don't like it! Time to be mindful of my health. I have created awesome programs to share with the moms of the world, but this time I want to use it for my own benefit! (check out my Intuitive Eating Program) It's time to take out the food journal and get to the bottom of this. It's time to walk the talk and figure shit out!
That's it! I don't want to overwhelm myself and my schedule with an endless list of things to do. I like the number 3 when it comes to action steps!
What about you? Would starting a mindfulness practice be beneficial? Is there a part of your life that could use a little more mindfulness? Let me know what your plan is in the comments below!
